It was back ordered, so I had to twiddle my thumbs, but it arrived last night and YOU BET I WAS ALL OVER IT. So, I did whatever good nerd would do, I bought more hardware. With the arrival of the G5, I was hoping to see a frame rate improvement even though the video card was effective to the same, but I was shocked to discover that my average frame rate for the same walk in Warcraft was ACTUALLY SLOWER. Turns out that terrain distance had the biggest effect, but whatever switches I flipped, I was happy and proceeded to play for several months before the G5 arrived. If there’s a slider in the video options of the game which allows me to control detail, I always max it out because I feel that’s how the game designers wanted me to see it… high quality, right? On my G4, it was painfully clear that Warcraft was going to be a visual pain if I maxed out the settings, so I surfed a bit and found out which options were the performance versus quality trade-offs.

Before I moved over to the new machine, I did a couple of frame rate checks meaning I walked around in Warcraft a bit and unscientifically observed the frame rate which averaged around 11 fps. The home machine, a Dual G4, was recently upgraded to a Dual G5 along with whatever video card came with the standard configuration… some ATI Radeon variant. It’s a better idea to look at finding a different computer to play on if that is an option for you. This is the obligatory, yes, I’ve been playing Warcraft and, yes, it’s eaten a ton of my time, and, yes, I’m saving for my mount and, dear lord, telling all of you sure isn’t helping my self confidence. Long story short, while you can play WoW on some models of MacBook Air, we really don’t recommend it, as you won’t have a good experience. You’d likely be spending at least a couple hundred dollars to get one, however, which really isn’t worth it for most people. The lack of a graphics card in the MacBook Air could be remedied by using an external graphics card you plug into a Thunderbolt port, called an eGPU. Because no model of the MacBook Air is currently available with a dedicated graphics card, you’d have to run the game on relatively low graphics settings and would likely experience low frame rate. World of Warcraft, like any game, runs best when you have a dedicated graphics card. Keep in mind that while you can run WoW on your MacBook Air if you have a model with a processor that meets or exceeds the minimum system requirements, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will run the game well. NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 750M or better AMD Radeon™ R9 M290 or better Intel® HD 530 (macOS 10.13 or higher, 45W) 2GB VRAM Metal capable GPUĪMD Radeon™ R9 M395X or better 4GB VRAM Metal capable GPU All of the new M1 Mackbook Air models should be able to play WoW without using Rosetta, as WoW runs natively on Apple Silicon. If you purchased a model with an Intel i5 or i7 processor, your MacBook Air should run WoW. For older Intel processor models, if you opted for one of the less expensive models with an Intel i3 processor, you won’t be able to play World of Warcraft on your MacBook Air. The minimum system requirements to run the game list at least an Intel i5-760 processor. The main factor when determining if your MacBook Air can run WoW is your processor. The answer depends on your MacBook Air’s configuration.
